In this post i’m going to create a very easy social media monitoring process that you can follow to monitor yourself and your brand(s) online. While there are monitoring services such as StepRep, Synthesio, Radian6 and so on that allow you to monitor and create analytics, they are not free. I have already wrote an article on Monitoring Your Social Media Initiatives which took a broad approach on this topic. However, this article will focus on those of you who do not currently have the budget for a social media monitoring service and want to follow an easy step-by-step system.

Here are the steps for a free social media monitoring process

Step 1) Create a list of keywords that you would like to keep tabs on. These could be your name, your companies name, your products name, etc. Keywords should be about 5-8 words or strings of words that someone would search for or write about online. These keywords are not necessarily the keywords that you use for your website, they are words that you wish to know if and when people are talking about them. Take these keywords and save them on your computer.

Step 2) Create a schedule for when you will perform your keyword monitoring. It is a good idea to perform the following steps 1-2 times per month. I would suggest doing this twice per month, every two weeks. While this will not give you real time updates and notify you when something is said, you will at least be looking about.

Step 3) Once you have your list of keywords, you are ready to start plugging them into a couple social media aggregation tools. These tools will give you the ability to search across the internet from online one to two locations.

Visit http://www.addictomatic.com. Here you will search for your first keyword. Lets say it is your name… or my name, “Kelsi Guidry”. You will put this name in the field and simply hit “Create”. This will then create search results from various areas of the web based on that keyword. Here you will find Tweets about you, blogs from Google Blog Search, YouTube video, etc. Addictomatic also give you the ability to drag and drop the boxes as you like and then save the URL with your search term.

You can then rinse and repeat with your list of keywords.

Step 4) Visit http://www.socialmention.com. Here you will find a search similar to Addictomatic. You will repeat your keyword search here as well. However, SocialMention will bring up different results and give you more detailed analytics for you search. Here you will be able to see what mentions were positive, neutral, and negative. You can even see where the mentions are coming from and from who.

Repeat your keyword searches here.

Step 5) Create notes based off of what you have found. Write down a few things that you have noticed. Maybe you can write down the number of mentions you had Vs. last week. By jotting down a few notes, you will keep a record of things that are found. These can be used for research on what your customers are saying and what they want. You could also use it to approach a negative blog post about you or your brand/company. You may also want to takes notes to simply judge on an increase or decrease of the amount of information that is out there about you and your brand/company.

Compare your notes with previous notes and share them with co-workers to have everyone on the same page of what is being said.

I hope this simple 5 Step Free Social Media Monitoring Process helps you are someone you know. Are there other free tools that you use besides a few social media aggregators? How often do you plan on monitoring? or if you already, what is your social media monitoring process?

If you only saw one movie this summer, we hope it was Inception. OK, not really ; but seeing as the level of buzz around the movie was just too great not to dig a little deeper, we thought we’d do just that…

At the first level of dreams, we found out that Warner used a multichannel marketing campaign to launch the initial Inception buzz and maintain it throughout the summer. They launched a Facebook page which not only asked for movie-goers’ reviews but also included a ‘must read’ online comic book prequel, The Cobol Job. Even earlier, they had launched the official movie site at the same time as an online video game Mind Crime. Players could unlock various hints and pieces of information about the film as they went further, creating a “drip feed” for fans.

Unfortunately we can only go back 6 months for social media monitoring data, so we decided to look at the breakdown of online buzz starting on the very first launch date – July 8, 2010 in the UK.

If we look at blogs, forums and mainstream media from July 8 to today, August 30, we can see that the buzz created via social media has paid off.

If you’ve considered joining YouTube but never actually became a member because you don’t have any videos to share, there’s actually nothing stopping you from joining. You don’t need to upload any videos to be a member.

In reality, most YouTube members haven’t uploaded any videos and they never will. They simply enjoy watching the videos of others and being a part of the YouTube community by leaving comments and ratings. You do need an account to take advantage of these features, so here’s how to get started.

Creating a YouTube account is really very easy, even more so than creating an email address in some cases.

On the YouTube homepage, click the “Create Account” link at the top. The site will ask you to enter a username. You may have to try a few different ones since there are so many YouTube members already and you can’t have the same name as another user. Try using something unique or adding a few numbers to the end of your username.

Next, YouTube will ask for your location, date of birth, and gender. The location you specify will determine the videos that the site shows you as well as the features that are available to you. If you’re dissatisfied with these options, you can go back and change your location at any time.

YouTube uses your date of birth to determine whether you’re eligible to view videos intended for audiences. Your selection for gender doesn’t seem to have any effect on your account; it’s most likely used for demographic tracking purposes by YouTube, allowing them to analyze the viewing habits of men and women.

If you want your friends to be able to find your YouTube account by your email address, check the appropriate box. This will allow your friends to see that you’ve joined YouTube and add your profile as a friend.

There’s one more box to check: the one that determines whether or not you’ll receive updates from YouTube. As the site already sends you a fair amount of email, I’d recommend keeping this box unchecked. Finally, click on the “I Accept” button at the bottom of the page, which signifies that you’ve read YouTube’s Terms of Service.

That’s it! You can now use your account to start interacting with the YouTube community.

Internet would be a good source to find services on flat roof repair and emergency roof repair

Yes, it appears Facebook has once again set off the privacy alarms. It only seems like yesterday when shared post after post liked from my news feed took me to instructions on how to change my privacy settings to remove my voice mail number from public view…with Facebook Places barely out off the launch pad, the backlash hit me like the heat from a blast furnace.

If you aren’t aware of this latest alleged attempt for Facebook to reveal everything but your underwear size, Facebook Places is similar to the Foursquare, Loopt, and Gowalla concepts – acting as a GPS agent, Places tracks where you are in the world and posts it to your profile. Gone down the street to Starbuck’s? Facebook is there. Off to see a movie? It’s on your Facebook.

What’s more, unless you change your privacy settings, your FB friends can tag you on Places. So, let’s say you *cough* called in sick to work so you could catch the Vans Warped Tour three towns over. If a friend spots you and tags you, it’s out there. We all know, too, what happens on Facebook could get you fired.

Now, as a businessperson using social media to promote your work and products, you have to ask yourself of what value is something like Facebook Places to you. Opponents of the tool cite security risks; many pointed to the defunct Please Rob Me site as an example of how even Tweeting your activities without a locator device could land you in trouble, so why let Facebook compound problems? If you have a personal Facebook account and a page to promote your company, does Facebook Places add something of value to your social media strategy?

It can, provided your business is a physical location that other Facebook users frequent, and are willing to mark in Places. One way to encourage promotion via this tool would be to offer incentives to anybody who marks your business in their profiles. Half off their dinner order at your restaurant, or 10% off their purchase or other discount on your services.

Whether or not you should use Facebook Places is up to you. Physical store owners, naturally, would be expected to be at work. If you do not feel comfortable with Facebook tracking your every move, don’t feel as though opting out will hurt your business. Yet, for those who choose to use it, keep the offers open, because word of mouth never hurts, no matter where the words are posted.

If you want to succeed in your SEO or any other business online, it is important that you know the effective ways about social media optimization. Below are some of the tips to help you market you prevent the risks of facing some of the most common social media marketing failures.

• List down all the things that you want to accomplish using your marketing strategy. Some of the things that you may want to include in your objectives are networking, SEO, customer relations, branding, and so many others.

• Always reach out for your target audience. Think like the way your target market does. What are they looking for and most importantly what do they want the most.

• Always give content that has the quality that they want. And see to it that you do it consistently. Consistent quality content is the key to help your social media marketing successful especially when it comes to search engine optimization.

• Do not give more time to marketing. Instead spend more time focusing on your content. If you would give high quality content, you do not have to try hard marketing because it will already do the work for you. You would be surprised to know how your website would become popular simply because you have the right content.

• Never abuse the power of optimization. With the right social media marketing strategies, sooner or later you will become part of the highest rankings in search engines. However, if you over-optimize it would actually do more harm than good in your website. Search engines are now doing some actions on sites who over optimize to prevent it from manipulating the results given by the search engines.

• Instead of giving a link to your site’s homepage, link to your About Me section so that they would know more about you first and your website.

• Include resources in your link. People would get tired if they would see that you are promoting your own website again and again. Look for websites that are relevant to yours and include it in your content. Do not even hesitate to include the links of your competitors as well. You might be surprised to know that this can actually be a great way to start networking and interlinking which is very essential in any new website.

• Create a good social network with the other website owners. Those who are in the same niche as yours may be your competitor but it actually does not matter when it comes to marketing social media. They can be your partners by exchanging links, joining online ventures together, and so many more possibilities. Other than exchanging links, you can also exchange comments at the same time.

Apple is a class example of a company chronically criticized for their lack of disclosure. It’s even been overheard that in order to work for Apple you have to sign a non-disclosure contract the size of 8 iPads put together.

They’ve therefore classically been criticized for not marketing interactively, ie putting free things into peoples’ hands to try and say that they’re cool.

We decided to investigate the legitimacy (or lack thereof) behind these claims.

I recently watched the movie “21″ for the first time a couple weeks ago. I know. It came out in 2008. It was one of those movies that slipped through the cracks. It was a really great movie. One of the lines that stuck in my head after the movie was this: “You know what I like most about Las Vegas? You can be whoever you want to be,” said by the character Jill Taylor.

Two things that I think a social medium offers to a user are access and recontextualization.

The first is simple and awesome. When you’re using social media you have a new found access to people and organizations. Twitter user @adrianparsons said it best: “Facebook is the people you went to high school with. Twitter is the people you wish you went to high school with.” I’m connected to so many awesome people through Twitter. I follow people who are rockstars in my line of work and people who are infinitely more talented than I am, and some of them even follow me. On Twitter, you can even follow celebrities and you never know when one of them will recognize you with a mention or a reply. And when you have a bad experience with a company, it’s really easy to vent in a social media arena and get a quick reaction from that company. That may not be the best and most civilized way to handle things, but it works. Social media is powerful in that sense.

The latter is extremely interesting and more power for the company. In each social media arena, people are going to be if nothing more, a slightly different version of themselves. You’re connected to different groups of people through different networks and that will affect what you say and how you say it. This idea of recontextualization can prove extremely useful if companies use it to shape the way they treat and interact with their customers. Someone who is normally a shy, quiet person in real life may be quite the opposite on Twitter. When you come in contact with people through social media, keep this is mind. Take care of those who engage with your company through social media as well as in real life. Treat them well. Recognize them. Make them the rockstars of your tribe.
